Flirt

This little guy pulled up along side our boat today and traveled with us for a bit. His smiling eyes seemed to say, "Well, hello there! Mind if I join you?!"

Can't say that I do ;-)

Unrecognizable

Recently, something wonderful happened. While I was opening the refrigerator door, I glanced to my right and noticed a picture on my mother's computer screen. It lingered briefly on the monitor - just long enough for me to think, "Who is that hottie?!?"

And then I realized who it was.

My ex-husband.

(Why it's still there is a whole other story, but I'm not gonna go there.)

All I could do was throw my head back and laugh. Chortle, actually.

He had become unrecognizable to me.

In the picture he was shirtless and tan. He had tight abs and flashed a huge smile. The letters R-H-E-A were painted down his arm (again, another story that I'm not gonna touch!).

And I felt nothing but nothing towards him.

WHAT?? When did this happen? When did all the pain up and disappear?

I've heard that it takes roughly half as long as the relationship lasted to "get over" someone. But, that's just an estimate. Luckily, for me, it hasn't been nearly that long.

The sting that was once there is gone. I don't remember when or how it left - but it did. I never woke up one day and said, "Wow. I'm all healed." Yet, I realize now that I am.

And everyone said I would, but I didn't believe them.

Everyone was right.

So, I hopped on over to my computer, turned up What Light by Wilco, danced around the island in the kitchen, and said a quiet little thank you to the man upstairs.

It's Okay!

I did something that I've never done before. And something that I admit may be a little crazy.

I visited an intuitive (psychic, astrologer, tarot/angel card reader...whatever you want to call her).

I really did.

She was in my Monday morning yoga class last week and after we met, I thought, why not?!

I've been feeling restless - frustrated with the desire but inability to move forward with my career due to licensing issues, and overwhelmed by the health situation and needs of my mother. I wanted (er, rather needed) someone to say, "This, too, shall pass. It's all going to be okay."

Gosh, isn't that a thought? Don't we all, from time to time, want someone to reassuringly say, "No worries. Have faith...it's all going to be okay!"

The skeptic in me kept the details of my life and reason for my stay in Florida hush hush...just 'cuz I wanted to see what she'd put out there.

And she did well. Amazingly accurate and dead on. I'm still replaying our conversation in my mind wondering if I revealed anything unknowingly that influenced her reading. Oh lordy, I probably did. But who knows (and I really don't care) because the best part of the reading is that I left feeling good.

But of course I did...she wants me to come back, right?!

Sheesh. Probably.

Unfortunately, today is a particularly uncomfortable day for my mom and I don't have any answers for her and there is nothing I can do to alleviate her pain. I took this photo of her last week when she was able to sit in her chair. I think this was Brutus' way of saying, "Grandma, it will be okay!"

What's in Your Pocket?

Last night, I pulled out a tiny, plastic bottle cap wrapper from my jean's pocket and I grinned.

Believe it or not, this little piece of trash reminded me of a conversation I had with a close friend. She said, "Rhea, I know you so well, I bet I can name the three items that are in your pockets - right now!"

So, while we were waiting in line at Starbucks, she did. And then, to our amusement, we challenged each other to name the items in the pockets of past and current loves, family members, and mutual friends. Kind of silly, seeing that we had no interest in checking our answers; and yet, we thought deeply about our responses and cracked each other up with our particular brand of insight.

After discovering the small plastic scrap, I remembered her list and my heart smiled:

1. An old ticket stub from a movie or a show or a band.

2. A tiny piece of trash or lint that I would hold onto until I found a garbage can (out of a deep commitment never to liter).

3. A fortune from a cookie or a token/keepsake that inspired me.

So, what's in your pocket? Is there anyone in your life that knows your ways well enough to tell you? And can you name all the items in someone else's pocket?

Give it a try! You may be surprised by what the answers reveal.

The Only Sport I Know Anything About

The U.S. Olympic swimming trials are on TV and I'm like an excited little girl on Christmas Eve who is unable to sleep because she knows Santa is on his way! I'm screaming at the TV like my father and brother occasionally do when watching golf (yep, you read that correctly), or ultimate fighting, or football. I know names and stats and even some of the swimmers personally.

I am truly a fan.

I'm also a fan of extra long hugs, shopping without time restrictions, and razor sharp wit.

But this is different. I'm actually wishing that I were in Omaha, NE - right now.

Yes, Omaha. You know it's serious folks.

Maybe I'll make a fan out of you, too - check out a former Longhorn swimmer (and total hottie) Aaron Peirsol in the 200m backstroke.

Haiku to G - Town

It's official - I'm all moved out of TX. And the feelings are mixed...I'm so excited for the future and learning and meeting new people, but undeniably apprehensive about leaving the Lone Star State. So what's a girl to do? Well, for starters, she should write a haiku!

Oh, I will miss you -
island of new beginnings.
Galveston, goodbye.

Good Things Come in Threes

Although brief - and long overdue - the following list recaps my 33rd birthday (from what I can remember). I'm calling it the Top 5 Reasons to Celebrate the Number Three list!

1. A fall, by yours truly, that left the peanut gallery at the bar singing (albeit silently, in their heads), "You're once, twice, THREE times a lady..."

2. THREE flights of stairs...

3. at THREE am ;)

4. THREE rounds of shots (awe, who am I kidding? The next morning I wish it had only been three).

And lastly,

5. Shamelessly acting as if I were turning twenty-THREE (go shorty...it's your birthday).

A big hug and mmmuahhh to y'all for making it so special.

I will miss you!

Um, I'm crushing you, Court!

Nice.

Very respectable ;-)

Miscommunication

Yesterday I had a craving for blueberry muffins and decided to make a quick stop at Randall's to pick up my most cherished fruit. Upon checking out, I noticed that the pint o' blueberries I was about to purchase was moldy. Gross (no wonder they were cheap). Here's the conversation that ensued after my discovery.

Me: Uh, you know what? I'm not going to get the blueberries after all.

Cashier: Do you want the blueberries?

Me (perplexed b/c I just said that I didn't): No, they're actually moldy.

Cashier: So wait, you don't want these?

Me: No, I've decided to eliminate moldy fruit from my diet (I was honestly trying to get her to smile).

Cashier (w/a confused look and annoyed tone): M'am...do you want me to set these over here?

Me (for the love of God, I don't want the moldy blueberries...throw. them. away.): Sure. That works.

Man next in line winks at me. Someone gets it.

The Big #2!!

Although Aunt Eya erroneously sent Ben a Happy #1 Birthday card, she has since figured out that 24 months actually equals TWO years. Math, schmath.

All I can say is that he's either laughing at me in this picture or in complete shock that he's turning two tomorrow and not one. Where did the time go?!

Happy Birthday big guy...I love you! Bru Bru sends his wags and licks, too :)

A Blog Break

is in order. After two months of waiting (including three lost transcripts - thanks NBCOT!), I finally have a date scheduled to take the national boards for OT.

June 6th. At noon.

Sheesh.

Therefore, I must hit the books with a bit more gusto and take a short hiatus from blogging.

And all I have to say is, "Oh. My. Gawd."

*Correction! The test has now been pushed back to the 7th! Unfortunately, there has been more lost paperwork by the Board. Oh, how I love the day-to-day suspense!

That's it!

My Tae Bo instructor has a rockin’ body. Lean, sculpted arms, a totally fat-free and lifted tush, tight abs (seriously - it's impossible NOT to notice). She’s also the mother of two little ones, which makes her level of fitness even MORE impressive.

So I asked her, “Is Tae Bo all you do to stay in such great shape?"

And she replied, “Yes! Tae Bo is AMAZING. I teach just six classes a week – that’s it!”

But then she paused and added, “Well, I also run. But only like 15 – 20 miles a week. That’s really it.”

Again, another brief pause.

“Actually, I swim and bike, too, but only once or twice a week. When possible, I like to compete in triathalons. But THAT’S IT.”

And I laughed. Her “that’s it” is A LOT ☺

Suddenly, I felt compelled to inquire about her diet.

“Do you follow a special diet?”

She responded, “I do!”

And with that, she led me to the women’s locker room to show me a poster on display describing all of the products by ARBONNE that she uses and even sells. High protein/low sugar shakes, Vitamin B energy drinks, appetite suppressing chocolates…

I smiled. She works really hard for her body. Her “that’s it” comments tell me that it doesn’t feel like work to her. But, truthfully, she’s dedicated a huge part of her life to staying fit and eating well.

This makes me happy. And hopeful. She's proof that working hard CAN and DOES pay off.

So, I bought a few of her products.

I can’t say there have been dramatic changes in my weight - because I rarely get on the scale, and who knows if I have lost fat or gained muscle. But, I can say this:

Yesterday, I did 50 push-ups. The hard way. And a month ago I could do only five.

And all I’ve been doing is working out everyday, running twice a week, avoiding sugar (but not eliminating it...check out yesterday's post!), limiting my alcohol consumption, using products by ARBONNE…

Um, yeah, that’s it.

Facing the Music

Yikes. This morning at the gym I actually paid a small fee to reveal what it is that I’m always trying to hide! I decided that it was time, for better or worse, to see just how much I weigh and what percentage of this weight is actually...fat. Not only that – my basal metabolic rate was calculated, my heart rate and blood pressure were assessed, and various body parts were measured. Oh boy.

I normally steer clear of machines and/or people that test this sort of stuff. Some things are better left unsaid. And some truths are better left untold. Right?!

But, the themes in my life these days center around change and acceptance (wait, isn’t that contradictory?!). Regardless, according to #11 of the Fundamental Truths, fear is the only obstacle to change. So, what exactly is it that I’m afraid of? Afraid of being too fat? Maybe. Afraid of not being healthy? Possibly. Afraid of not being perfect? Definitely.

Lying next to me is a computer print out of everything that is wonderfully not perfect about me.

And I accept that ;)

The Fundamental Truths

In preparation for moving, I cleaned out my files yesterday and discovered the following list (I’ve been finding all sorts of hidden treasures). Yes, it’s a little self-helpish, but it’s also poignant and means more to me now than it ever did.

Fundamental Truths

1. The only person you can change is you (thank goodness, ‘cuz I’m a lot of work).

2. The only problem you will have in a given day is you (this one is debatable!).

3. Today is the only day you have (then what am I doing blogging right now?).

4. You can’t change the past (wouldn’t want to).

5. The key to happiness is how much you value yourself (my personal fav).

6. The only way you value yourself is by the repetition of healthy behaviors (bring it on tae bo...I’ll see you this afternoon).

7. Nothing outside yourself will bring you happiness - only joy (although Brutus’ kisses, a class of fine red wine, and Dove chocolate walk the fine line).

8. Have expectations of yourself and not of others (still learning this one).

9. Love of others can only happen if self-love is present (I heart me!).

10. The driving force behind every human being is the sense of feeling that you are loved (‘every human being’ might be a stretch – or have I been watching too many shows like 48 Hours?)

11. Fear is the only obstacle to change (so feel the fear and do it anyway!).

Awe...shucks.

Sadly, my days of stealing wireless internet are over. I was online last week and suddenly was prompted to enter a password. What? Huh? NOOOOO!!!! I don't know how my neighbor figured it out...or why it took him or her this long (my thieving has lasted over a year), but gosh dang it, why now? And in the midst of all my research, no less!!

I am now spending my days across the island at a local coffee shop. I called the cable company to inquire about installation, and it turns out that a daily Pellegrino or iced coffee is a much less expensive alternative - given my impending move.

So, to my neighbor that I don't know, I am truly ashamed. But hugs and snaps to you...for the months and months of free internet access. You were a life saver ;)

Galveston men - alcohol = a brand new city to move. Maybe.

Gabby and I decided that we needed a night out on-the-town. She left her boyfriend at home to cry over the Rocket's loss to the Utah Jazz, and I left...Brutus. Neither one of us was in the mood to drink more than a glass or two of wine, and ironically, this made for one helluva night. Today, while we were rehashing the absurdities of our evening, Gab proclaimed, "There was something funky goin' on in the air last night!" Yes, I believe so.

We glammed up at her place beforehand. I donned a new strapless and fabulous tank from ha.ba's, and she rocked it out in a simple black dress. We left for Murphy's Pub having no idea how much attention our little get-ups would attract.

First up - Damien. Damien had just been arrested. As in 15 minutes prior to sitting down with us. (By the way, we did not invite him to sit with us. Nor, did we invite ANY of the men to join us at our table. And yet, they came, they sat, and they stayed...probably because we never asked them to leave.) But, back to poor Damien who had a penchant for winking and telling me that I was beautiful. This was funny and ridiculous for two reasons: a) he was like 17-years-old (tops), and b) spit flew out of his mouth each time he said it. Thankfully, the police and a 6'10" 420 lbs. bouncer came and escorted Damien away from our table and out of the bar.

Next, we met Tim and James. Tim was 50ish, owned a Harley, resembled Willie Nelson, and had a knack for pleasant, light hearted chitchat. UNTIL he mentioned that he once dressed up in crotch-less panties and wore Stelleto heels while getting "kinky" with a woman he met at a Pimp and Whore party (and that's the edited version). Um, buh-bye Tim.

(Talking to James was about as interesting as pressing snooze on my alarm clock).

Which brings me to Frankie. Right off the bat you know he's trouble with a name like Frankie (which is sort of like Billy). Frank - fine. Bill - respectable. But adding an "ie" to the end of these names is cause for alarm. Frankie stopped me while I was returning from the restroom. He leaned in and said, "There are two parts that I love on a woman's body. One of them being her collar bone. Ooooh, I want to lick and kiss your collar bone."

Yes, he really did say that.

I smiled and laughed. And I was genuinely laughing - at him. I walked away wondering, "What is it about my face or demeanor that says this is a reasonable and appropriate thing to say to me?" We immediately left the bar.

Surprisingly, sobriety did not bring us home. Instead, we decided to hop on over to another g-town fav of ours, Tsunami.

As Gab went up to the bar to get us water, CJ slid across the bench to introduce himself to me. I'll admit that his current status as a 3rd year med student intrigued me; but, his overuse of the words conundrum and fortuitous (yes, I counted) abated any sparks of my interest. That, and his hand waving, slight lisp, and my overwhelming suspicion that he secretly wished I was a Ray. Or a John. Or a Matt. You get the point. He did, however, bring with him Jeremy.

Our conversation was brief, but all signs indicated that Jeremy was/is normal. Relatively speaking, of course. He's a doctor interested in internal medicine and moving to the Bay Area in CA next month. He also grew up in upstate NY and went to college in VA.

Coincidences? Sure. A sign pointing to where I should head next? Hmmmm...

Believe it to achieve it!!

Okay, so the title of this post is more than a little corny. But it's so true! I'm not too proud to admit that I've been a fan of the Biggest Loser for years. Unfortunately, I was not able to watch this past season, but came across this clip of the winner on msnbc. If you're in need of some inspiration - not only to get off your rump and exercise, but to go after whatever it is you want in life - then listen to this!!

I'd like some order with a side of routine, please!

Working from your home has its perks. Two of which include a) limited interruptions and b) the use of my own toilet. But, it also has its challenges if you're a person prone to wasting time, which unfortunately, I am. Wait, wasting time sounds harsh and irresponsible - filling my time with enjoyable activities that are not work related is perhaps closer to the truth ;) Yesterday I decided that in order to complete the seemingly staggering amount of work I have before me, I must impose structure onto my day. I must create and follow a schedule, make and meet deadlines, and exercise a little self-discipline and stick-to-itiveness.

I can do this. Right?! My "true" nature might suggest otherwise. Have you heard of the Myers-Briggs personality test? If you have, then you can understand how difficult this is for a "P"!! If you haven't, then click here to take an abridged version of the exam. It's fun. But, I digress...

Back to adding structure to my day. I decided to join a gym that offers group classes. Specifically, I'm interested in Pilates and spinning classes ('cuz pretty soon it will be too hot to run along the Seawall and I need me some cardio). Yesterday, I attended my first Pilates class. I had assumed that with all of my yoga experience, this would be a breeze.

How wrong of me to assume. Pilates is soooo not breezy.

Today, as I type this, there is a tightness in my abdomen that is worrisome. And surprising. When did this happen? I mean, when did all of my core strength disappear? Better yet, did I ever really have any? Running has clearly tricked me into thinking I am stronger than I truly am. I spent most of the class in hysterics. (I have a bizarre tendency to laugh when I'm in extreme pain. But, forty-five minutes into the class, we ALL were cracking up - thank you very much).

No worries, though. I'm not someone who gives up easily . I WILL spin this evening. And I WILL get a lot "checked" off my daily to-do list before class.

(Hmmm...encouraging statements or actual facts?!!?)

Like Father, Like Daughter

In February, I bought my father a Senseo for his birthday. He has a horrible habit of reheating (and drinking) day old coffee. Seeing him do this has actually made me gag. With the Senseo, one brews a fresh cup of joe EVERY time. It's fast, easy, frothy, and most importantly, fresh! My intent was to put an end to his left over coffee consumption. I even went so far as to design a card featuring a coffee mug placed inside of a circle with a line drawn through the circle. Written on the coffee mug were the words, "Day Old Coffee." Clearly, it's a pet peeve of mine!

But, this morning I did the unthinkable.

I'm justifying drinking yesterday's brew with thoughts like, "Well, I'm saving money." And, "Look at that, I waste nothing!" And, "Wow, how environmentally responsible of me. Surely the microwave uses less energy than than the coffee machine, don't cha think?"

The reality is...I was lazy.

My sincere apologies to my dad for giving him grief. It wasn't that bad.

Where Will I Live?

In the coming months, a lot will happen. Hopefully, I will pass my OT exam with flying colors. A paper, describing the relationship between our built environment and the country's current obesity epidemic will be written and read (with much adoration) by the UTMB's School of Occupational Therapy. Guidelines for the city of Galveston outlining my ideas for a livable city will be created. A presentation will be given. My name will be officially changed.

But, perhaps most importantly, a new city of residence will be chosen and a job working with brain injured individuals will be secured. And in the process of moving, all that needs to be left behind will be, with little regret or remorse.

The current cities and states on my radar:
Houston, TX
Charlotte, NC
Nashville, TN
Bay Area, CA
Tampa, FL
Denver, CO

Sooo, for now, I'm sitting back, concentrating on writing and studying and enjoying my time left in Galveston. AND, I'm keeping score (on the aforementioned cities). For example, today I received an email from a native Texan. An everything is bigger and better, don't mess with Texas kind of person. This email actually said, "The eyes of Texas are upon you!" Um, what?? Sorry Houston, that's a mark for you. Too many and I'm gonna have to let you go.

Stay tuned.

For the Love of Second Base

Me: So whad'ya do this weekend?

Melody:
Well, I walked close to 39 miles and raised over $2,200 for breast cancer research.

Me:
Hot dayem.

Saving the tatas - one painful, blistered and lanced foot at a time.
Day two, and another half marathon down.
I'm in awe. It's pretty incredible what a group of women will accomplish when they set their minds to something. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer was held in Houston this past weekend and raised almost 2 million dollars!!

Melody, quite simply, you rock.

The Kite Runner

Two or three years ago, this book made its debut on the book club circuit. I've finally carved out time in my schedule to read it. And what a read it is! I started this book this morning and I finished it this afternoon. I guess this is sort of like eating an entire box of doughnuts in one sitting. You know you should probably pace yourself, and save a few for later - but you just. can't. stop.

And yet, I can't take credit for being the speediest reader. My friend Kim finished all 768 pages of Exile, by Richard North Patterson, in like 36 minutes. Seriously.

(Okay, not really. Nevertheless, she reads ridiculously fast.)

But back to The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. It's lovely. And does everything a well written book should.

Here are a few of my favorite passages, in no particular order:
For you a thousand times over!

I slipped the picture back where I had found it. Then I realized something: That last thought had brought no sting with it. Closing Sohrab's door, I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.

Mashallah, God has granted you a special talent. It is now your duty to hone that talent, because a person who wastes his God-given talents is a donkey.

Just Another Day In Paradise

I am pretty sure that I am in paradise.

Earlier today I thought, "Oh my gawd. I'm in paradise."

Why am I just realizing this? I've been to FL a million times. Apparently I've always been too busy with making to-do lists or planning or running or cleaning or organizing to notice. But the past several days I've made a conscious effort to breathe. Deeply. And to appreciate my surroundings, this visit, and the time I have with my parents. Sure, nagging in the back of my head are the thoughts, "Shit, I need to figure out where I am going to live." And, "Crap, I better start studying for the OT exam." And "F%$#, why did I ever apply for that scholarship that I still have to write?" And, "Lawd, I need a job." (And gosh dang it, I swear too much).

For now, though, I am doing my best to ignore my conscious...and curb the potty talk.

I am also enjoying everything that paradise is throwing my way :) Just take a look:

A Corona moment.

Do it again.

Pink explosion.

It's a hop hop!

Worth Remembering

A new chapter in my life is about to begin. Hopefully, this chapter will include financial compensation for a job I love (and the past 3 years of grad school were not in vain!). But before movin' on up, I feel it imperative to record a few of my favorite quotes as an occupational therapy intern. Here are my top five:

1. "My soul wants to trade places with my old body." - A 19-year-old head-injured victim of a car crash.

2. "Come on Linda - you know how I feel about you. Have lunch with me." - Nick, aka 'the perv in 705B.' (For the umpteenth time, I AM NOT LINDA!!)

3. "I've gotten out of bed every day since I've been here and I am not going to do it anymore! I am NEVER getting out of this bed again." - A cranky and unreasonably obstinate patient protesting my request to help him get dressed and washed up for breakfast.

4. "You better stop shaking that thing around me and put it away." - An elderly and quite senile man referring to my ASS!!! (FYI - I was helping a patient walk!)

5.
Me: "Do you remember my name?"
Patient: "Of course I do. It's Nancy."
Me: "And how do you spell Nancy?"
Patient: "R-H-E-A. Nancy."

Given my penchant for changing jobs and cities of residence, it's hard to wrap my head around the idea that I have finally, after 32 years, figured out what I want to be :) But I think I just might have...

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Well said.

I am not normally in the habit of reading celebrity blogs, but I happened to stumble across John Mayer's and actually enjoyed what I was reading. I wanted to share part of what he wrote:
What now, then? I can only really say for myself: Enjoy who I am, the talents and the liabilities. Stop acting careless. In fact, care more. Be vulnerable but stay away from where it hurts. Read. See more shows. Of any kind. Rock shows, art shows, boat shows. Create more art. Wear hoodies to dinner. Carry a notebook and hand it to people when they passionately recommend something and ask them to write it down for me.

Root for others.

Give more and expect the same in return, but over time.

Act nervous when I'm nervous, puzzled when I don't know what the hell to do, and smile when it all goes my way. And never in any other order than that.

And when it's all over, whether at the end of this fabulous career or of this life, which I hope takes place at the same time, I should look back and say that I had it good and I made the most of it while I was able. And so should you.

Easter Bunny Magic

As I was getting ready for bed last night, I discovered Faith in my medicine cabinet. Love was waiting for me under my pillow. Happiness was inside of my Target bag and A Perfect Job was not far from reach, nestled in the toe of my pink slipper. I'm on the lookout for Peace. She's gotta be here somewhere ;)

Thanks silly wabbit - you made me cry!

...until we meet again.

Spending more time (than usual) with a few of my favorite people has been a perk to living near the east cost. Somehow, we've always managed to find a way to get together for weddings, birthdays, holidays, and other life changing events; and now that we're in driving distance from each other, our yearly visits have tripled! Friends that feel like family...on so many levels...are what it's all about. Here's a taste of my St. Patty's weekend in Baltimore:

My favorite college roomie.
Hard to believe I lost at Golden Tee with moves like this!
I think she's digging your manly armpit smell, John.
Okay - that's more normal.
Don't let our respectable composure in this pic fool you.
I've purposely left out our karaoke pics because they were a little too ridiculous to post, but I can assure you that Debbie Gibson would have been proud. Number 15 on my list - check ;)

Cheers. I miss y'all already.

Oh, in case it wasn't obvious, I stole the title of this post from a famous Irish blessing:

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rain fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

They will hug her, and squeeze her, and call her...

Katherine Marie. Or Kate - for short! She is 8lbs and 10oz of sweetness. Just take a look:

Welcome to the world little one!

Happy. Ness.

Today the skies were BLUE, and the sun was SHINING, and I left the hat, scarf, and gloves at home. People smiled and yelled happy things to me from across the street. On his walk, Brutus did circles in the grass and made new friends. The ice melted. Our spirits lifted. And a baby decided to be born!

Kim is in labor...as I type this. Her little girl picked a beautiful day to enter the world.

I'm tired!

So I am just posting a silly picture that made me laugh. It's clever really. And stupid.

But, I'd probably chuckle a bit if this pulled up to my bus stop.

Planetary Advice

Freewill Astrology publishes weekly horoscopes, and I found mine to be particularly interesting. So, if you're a Cancer too, read carefully!

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 28

"Never play cards with a man called Doc," said Nelson Algren in his book A Walk on the Wild Side. "Never eat at a place called Mom's. Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own." Whether or not you generally heed cautionary advice like that, I suggest that you adopt a more freewheeling approach in the coming weeks. In fact, given the frontier-prowling, rules-breaking, fun-erupting nature of your current astrological indicators, you may benefit from experimenting with a host of exploits that at any other time might seem iffy or dicey or itchy.

Iffy, dicey, or itchy. Very interesting.

I'll do my best.

Winter Wonderland

I had to get outside today to enjoy the recent snowfall.

I am pretty sure that I am living in the most perfect part of Pittsburgh. I'm in short walking distance to hiking trails and hair salons and bars where everyone knows your name :)

Happy Saturday. I hope a bit of fresh air is in your forecast!

I'm dreaming of a white...

leap year! Spring has definitely not sprung. Big, heavy, thick, wet snowflakes have been falling all day and Brutus couldn't be friskier.

I must be adjusting to the cold because right now I'm loving it :)

Who knew...

that Marcia Cross could be so inspirational?! She graced the cover of this month's issue of Health magazine and her interview ended with this quote:

You have to work to make a fairy tale come true. Don’t sit back and wait for it to come to you. Do everything you can to create the kind of life you want.

And, who knew that Mandy Moore could sing a song that I just Love? And that's love with a capital L! Click here to listen and watch.

Blog Stalker

I recently discovered the Bloggies - a yearly online contest held to choose the best/most popular blogs on the internet. And guess what? It's held in Austin, Texas. Of course it is - Austin is just that cool. Anyway, I have been reading away to my heart's content and must say that I am inspired...and occasionally weirded out. Y'all need to check out a few of my favs (and boy does the phrase y'all stand out in Pittsburgh). There are some very talented and creative bloggers, and I am sort of feeling like I should rename my blog 'Vanilla' - it's seeming a little plain.

For a complete list of all the nominees: The 2008 Bloggies

Clever: PostSecret

Freaky: So Very Alone, particularly this post!

Helpful: Lifehacker

Shallow, but entertaining: Go Fug Yourself

Yummy: The Pioneer Woman Cooks

Just for bloggers: NaBloPoMo

Alrighty, that's as far as I've gotten.

Buddha Speaks (and I Remember)

I've had the wonderful opportunity to resume my yoga practice while living in Pittsburgh. Different styles of yoga seem to mark different time periods in my life, and tonight's session reminded me of the very first yoga class I attended - almost 8 years ago. My introduction to yoga was a small part of a life changing weekend spent in Chicago, with my dear friend, Holly. Remembering that trip, while lying in Savasana, brought tears to my eyes (although admittedly, I have a habit of tearing up while lying in Savasana). I welcomed the tears and the memories that surrounded their release. It's a weekend worth blogging about - because it's a weekend I never want to forget.

It was a weekend of 'firsts.' It was my first time visiting Holly in Chicago...and hugging her after she was diagnosed with cancer...and holding her hand during her chemotherapy treatment...and witnessing, or rather, feeling her courage. It was also the first time in my life to offer comfort and support to someone experiencing more pain and uncertainty than I could comprehend.

And it was Holly's first time to get drunk as a chemo patient!! I watched her hold back tears and vomit to toast to my arrival, our friendship, and her recovery. After spending the afternoon in the hospital, we dined on overpriced salads and obsessed over the veins in her arms (in order to keep her veins from collapsing, she rotated their use). We talked incessantly - hypothesizing why this was happening to her, and what it was all supposed to mean. And we laughed. Mostly because of Holly's unique observation skills, subtle facial expressions, biting sarcasm, and natural tendency to be overly empathetic when listening to you explain your frustrations - however trivial. We stayed up late, drank every drop of wine we could get our hands on, and imagined what her new life would be like...after the cancer was gone.

Somehow, after all of the alcohol consumption and life contemplation, she managed to get up the next morning to attend a yoga class with me.

I can't recall the area of Chicago we were in, but it was trendy and artsy, and we casually strolled the streets until we found an empty yoga class to take (because really, when you've never done something before, and you're feeling awkward and weak, and completely inflexible, it's best to have all the attention on you!). The experience was memorable - in a painful sorta way - for two reasons. Downward "fucking" dog (Holly's words) and our hangover. She never went back.

I, however, didn't give in so easily. I tried out several studios in Austin until I found a fit, and remained diligent to my practice for several years. It feels good to reopen this part of my life.

The instructor in class today read a quote from the Buddha that Holly would have liked. She said, "Praise and blame, gain and loss, pleasure and sorrow come and go like the wind. To be happy, rest like a great tree in the midst of them all."

Click on the Buddha for more food for thought.

Baby G's Cd

I was asked to assemble a baby making CD. Literally. Kim is set to give birth in the very near future (see the recent pic of her for proof), and I've accepted the very important, although often overlooked, responsibility of selecting music for the event. Woah. This is a serious request ;) I mean, the first music to grace her baby girl's ears ('Baby G' to me) - outside of the womb - is at my discretion!! I have contemplated what songs to include for several weeks, and here's what I'm thinking (and why). But suggestions are always welcomed 'cuz there is still time to tweak!

1. Capri by Colbie Caillat

There'll be no surprise
That she'll grow to be
So beautifully
Just like her mother

2. The One Who Loves You the Most by Brett Dennen

When you forgive your imperfections
And you've auctioned all your clothes
And you look to see your true reflection
You will be the one who loves you the most

I struggle with this. Let's hope Baby G never does.

3. I Hope by the Dixie Chicks

Don't we all hope for more love, more joy and laughter - especially when new life enters our world?

4. Hold You In My Arms by Ray LaMontagne

Beautiful voice. Beautiful man. The lyrics, I could hold you forever seem perfect for a mother and her newborn.

5. Upside Down by Jack Johnson

Somehow Jack always makes the cut. This song reminds us to welcome change, shoot for the impossible, nurture our own curiousity...and to always keep trying.

6. Honey and the Moon by Joseph Arthur

He's been a favorite of mine for years; and hopefully, his soothing sound will help to relax Mom on the big day.

7. A Minor Incident by Badly Drawn Boy

This song is actually kind of sad. But I was drawn to the lyrics, There's nothing you could never do to ever let me down; And remember that I'll always love you.

8. Just Like the Moon by Brett Dennen

I am in love with all things Brett at the moment.

9. Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin

Baby G is a miracle. From heaven. And her birth will surely make for a "Heavenly Day!"

10. Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee

No explanation needed. The title says it all.

11. Graceland by Paul Simon

Because it's one of the best. And it's happy and energizing. And although I can't say for sure, I am sensing that Baby G will be a peace loving, hybrid driving, Obama supporting, and organic foods consuming kinda baby.

12. She's Mine by Brett Dennen

Surprise. More Brett. And yes, she is all yours Kim and Erik. Congratulations!

13. Lullaby by Dixie Chicks

Every bit of this song is for a baby.

14. Oh by Dave Matthews

'Cuz of lines like:
I love you oh so well
Like a kid loves candy and fresh snow

And because we used to watch him perform on Wednesday nights at the Flood Zone in Richmond, VA. For a measly five bucks.

15. Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison

This is to remind Mom that little girls are sweet - like honey.

(But, they're also sassy, intelligent, strong willed, bold, independent...hmmm, I'm feeling another CD brewing!!)

Envy

Courtney sent these pics today. My first reaction was to tilt my head to the right and quietly whisper, "Awe." Not just because she looks so happy and cute, and her new little Zoe is so fabulously adorable, and the horse and stable are gorgeous...but because I was immediately drawn to her outfit (and the sunlight shining on it)! She is wearing, what appears to be, a lightweight, cotton - like sweater. And that's IT. Tomorrow's high in Pittsburgh is projected to reach a scorching 17 degrees, with a wind chill that will make it feel something like negative holy shit I didn't know it could ever be this cold.

Oh, how I pine for warmer weather.

It IS easy bein' green!

And here are a few ways:

Support Tonic. They carry 4 limited edition t-shirts made from bamboo and organic cotton. Each shirt supports a specific cause. For example, buy The Tree Tee and plant 25 trees in North America. Or the Net Tee and send three bed nets to sub-Sahara Africa to combat malaria. Why the hell not?!

Stop junk mail and plant trees by becoming a member of GreenDimes. I've got ties to this one friends...my brother was once an employee, AND the company was founded by a dear friend's husband (who jump started Tonic, as well).

Check out Sam Davidson's and Stephen Moseley's book New Day Revolution: How to Save the World in 24 Hours. Be surprised by the little PRACTICAL things you can do daily to help save the planet. "Will you please kill him?!!"

A grim (yet sincere) request voiced by an elderly patient to her physical therapist. The 'him' she was referring to is her doting husband, who has been by her side through every step of her therapy. Poor guy.

But, this did make me chuckle. Actually, I did more than just chuckle...I empathized. I was married ;)

Read why she's #71...

on the list.

Suspicious Packaging
By Kristin Armstrong

"Every delay fortifies our patience and allows for time to prepare and mature. Every physical setback forces us to rest and recover, building strength in other ways. Every weakness and temptation heightens our awareness of our need for others and for God. Every bout of loneliness or depression reminds us to love lavishly when we are able. Every embarrassment keeps our sense of humor intact. Every gaping hole of loss could be a window."

"More Hyperlinks Please!"

What my baby wants my baby gets (in this case...hyperlinks).

This request has been a little challenging for me. First, I needed to perfect my hyperlinking skills; and then, of course, I had to decide what to include. I do realize that the suggestion was never meant for one long hyperlinked post - but I decided that if I am going to do something, I'm gonna go big or go home. Haha!!

So, I thought I'd try to kill two birds with one stone and tell you about my new life in Pittsburgh, while inundating you with hyperlinks. Please, take your time with this one and click away :)

I've created my "Perfect Day" in Pittsburgh...a conglomeration of all things I've done (and enjoyed) thus far...

1. SLEEP (at least past 5 am).

2. Kiss the little guy good morning, and then dance along with him to The Gambler.

3. Chow down on Erik's pancakes.

4. Chat with Kimmie about our lives, children, bellies (and all they carry!), kisses and hugs, politics, brain injured pets, books, men, cooking...I mean, what else is there?!

5. Attend a spinning class (but ONLY because it's too cold to run outside).

6. Leisurely peruse Kards Unlimited, a cozy, one-of-a-kind card and book store located in Shadyside.

7. Blog at The Coffee Tree while sipping on a single shot Americano.

8. Mosey through the shops on Walnut St. in my new brown and pink polka dotted boots.

9. Laugh at several of my patients with a fellow student intern from Pitt. Oh, that's horrible. I mean laugh with my patients, of course.

10. Relax and warm up at a yoga class in Squirrel Hill.

11. Make up a new and fabulously delicious pizza recipe using Trader Giotto's pizza dough.

12. Split a mouth watering Cafe Mocha cupcake from Dozen with my cousin, Heidi.

13. Complete a six hour online defensive driving course. Nah...that sucked.

14. Get lost while driving in the South Side (despite using my Garmin)!

15. Cry while watching the moving Reign Over Me.

16. Briefly fall asleep in this claw foot bath tub.

17. Read something by Sark, while snuggling with Brutus under layers of quilts.
